Getting Started

Installation Guide

Follow these steps carefully. First time install and patching an existing version are different — make sure you follow the right set.

🆕 First Time Install

1

Download the zip

Click the Download button above. Save the zip file somewhere you'll remember — your Desktop or Documents folder is fine.

2

Extract the zip

Right-click the zip file → Extract All. Choose a permanent location — C:\Purseview or D:\Purseview works well. Don't run it from inside the zip.

3

Run START_HERE.bat

Open the extracted folder and double-click START_HERE.bat. This installs Python and all dependencies automatically. It may take a few minutes the first time.

⚠ Windows may show a security warning. Click More info → Run anyway. This is normal for unsigned software.
4

Open Purseview

Once setup completes, your browser will open automatically at http://127.0.0.1:8989. If it doesn't, open your browser and go there manually.

💡 Use Firefox or Chrome. Avoid Internet Explorer or Edge in compatibility mode.
5

Set up your PIN

On first run you'll be asked to create a 6-digit PIN and save a recovery code. Keep the recovery code somewhere safe — it's your only way back in if you forget your PIN.

🔄 Updating / Applying a Patch

1

Back up your data first

Inside Purseview, go to Settings → Backup and create an encrypted backup. Keep this file safe — it contains all your financial data.

⚠ Always back up before updating. Do not skip this step.
2

Download and extract the new version

Download the latest zip. Extract it to a new folder — don't overwrite your existing installation yet.

3

Run START_HERE.bat

Run START_HERE.bat from the new folder. It will automatically detect your existing installation and preserve your data.

💡 The installer is smart enough to skip database initialisation if it finds existing data. You don't need to copy anything manually.
4

Verify everything looks correct

Check your income, outgoings, and debts are all intact. If anything looks wrong, restore from your backup via Settings → Restore.
